Members of First Presbyterian

Membership in First Presbyterian Church is open to those who trust in Christ alone as their Savior.  They may enter the church through a profession of faith, re-affirmation of faith, or by a letter of transfer from another reformed and presbyterian congregation.  Ordinarily, those who wish to become members must go through a membership class for three to six weeks, where they will be introduced to our church's history, composition, and beliefs.  Following that, they must be interviewed and approved for membership by the session.  The session will want to be assured that those who join the church have a credible profession of faith, understand the nature of church membership and its obligations, and are willing to submit to the oversight of the session.  The authority of the session is limited by Scripture and the Form of Government of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.  To learn more about our church government, including its book of church order, you may consult our national website, www.opc.org, and you will find all that you need there to get acquainted with us.

Communicant Members

Communicant members are those who have been publicly received into the membership of First Presbyterian Church, and are entitled to vote in congregational meetings on matters such as the church budget, the installation of church officers, service on the board of trustees, and in other matters as well.  The financial commitment of the members is to give as the Lord has prospered them.  As a general rule, we ask that members consider a tithe of their income as consistent with their obligation to support the ministry here.  We are grateful for "the widow's mite" as well as the generosity of Barnabus, the "son of encouragement" (Acts 4:32-37).  All offerings are freewill offerings, and no one is pressured or asked to give more than what they can afford.

Service in the church is according to your gifts and calling.  Christ gives gifts to all his children to be used in his kingdom.  Some may have much to offer, others less, but all are important and necessary for the proper functioning of the body.  Whether you teach in the Sunday School, distribute tracts, or clean the pews, your work is vital and brings glory to the Lord.

Covenant Children

Our covenant children are members of Christ's visible church, but have not yet come to that point in their lives where they are ready to confess their faith in Christ.  As they grow and mature, we will encourage them to trust in Christ, and welcome them to the communion table when they give evidence of their faith.
