The Rev. Richard Scott MacLaren, Pastor

Welcome to the new web site of First Presbyterian Church!  We have designed this site to introduce you to the life and ministry of our church, and to be a place where members of our church can get updates on the progress of our mission.  Sermon and worship videos are available on this website by clicking on the "Sermons" button on the left.  After exploring this site, you might also go to our primary website at www.firstchurchopc.com to learn more about our ministry, or click on our "Connections" button to the left to learn more about our broader church relationships within the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and other ministries.

Our congregation is from the Perkasie and greater Pennridge communities with a wide range of ages and backgrounds.  We have joined together to proclaim the great salvation accomplished for us by Jesus Christ.  It is our desire to see many in our community trust in Jesus Christ to receive God's free gift of eternal life, so that with us they may praise the Lord for all that he has done.  We also desire to minister to those who already believe, strengthening them in their faith and equipping them to serve others in love.  We have a great time of fellowship together, and are eager for new friends to join with us. You will find a loving church home with us, a place of peace and joy for your family, centered on God's holy word.

Our goal is to build a reformed and presbyterian congregation in the Pennridge community committed to advancing God's kingdom in every area of life.  We wish to see our homes, churches, schools, businesses, recreations, culture, governments and nation led by God's Word and Spirit. Jesus Christ is Lord of all, and to him belongs our complete devotion and faithful service.  If you live in the community but worship elsewhere, shouldn't you be working to advance God's kingdom in the community where He has placed you?  Please join us as we seek to lead our local community to faith in Christ and to reform its life under his covenant of grace.

Coming Events:

  • Our Unemployment Support Group will meet next on Thursday, June 11 at 11:00 AM.  This group will meet for four weeks and provide support and encouragement to those who have been displaced in our current economy.  We will cover a wide range of topics, from how to deal with your emotions (fear, anxiety, depression), to how to write an effective resume and prepare for a job interview.  All are welcome to attend.
  • Our Sunday Worship Services start at 9:30 AM and all are welcome to attend.  Pastor MacLaren will speak from his series of  messages called, "Isaiah: Prophet of Salvation." Living during a time of global threats and domestic unrest, Isaiah was called to proclaim God’s profound word of judgment and grace to Israel.  He possessed a strong social conscience, which prompted him to speak out vigorously against the religious formalism and social injustice of his day.  At the same time, he pointed to the God of grace, who stands ready to forgive, who says to his people, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white a snow.”  He spoke of the future with words of hope, foretelling the coming of God’s righteous kingdom on earth and the salvation that comes with the Messianic King.  He reminds us that “the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”  In our modern age when there is so much emphasis on religious tolerance and social justice, we need to listen what Isaiah says.  More often than not, modern religion is an excuse for greed and moral posturing rather than a source for mercy and grace.  ‘Social justice’ often promotes values that oppose the sanctity of human life, traditional marriage, and private property.  In this series of messages, we will see how Isaiah, the Prophet of Salvation, points us in a different direction.
  • Our Sunday School will continue our consideration of the 12th chapter of Romans.  Written by the apostle Paul, this book was instrumental in starting the Protestant Reformation.  In it the apostle Paul explains God's plan for saving us from our sin and death through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ. In the course of this study, you will learn about the desperate condition of the human heart, the remedy God has freely provided through the righteousness of his Son, and the changed life that comes from faith in Jesus.  You may find through this study that you can say with the great German reformer Martin Luther, "This letter is truly the most important piece in the New Testament. It is purest Gospel. It is well worth a Christian's while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul. It is impossible to read or to meditate on this letter too much or too well. The more one deals with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes."
  • We are now posting videos on this website of recent Sunday sermons, Just click on the tab for "sermons" and you will be able to watch the video.
  • See the latest edition of "The MacLaren Commentary" on our commentary page.  Pastor MacLaren introduces the idea of a distinctly Christian commentary on current events in the public arena.  What should a Christian think about issues like the war in Iraq, free trade agreements, public education, and genetic engineering?  Does the Bible give us any direction on these matters, or are we left to the opinion of government experts?  We'll explore topics like this in the months ahead.
  • Are you new to the Christian Faith?  We have just the thing for you.  Stepping in on a worship service right away may be rather intimidating, and perhaps there are some things there that you don't understand.  So why not take an introductory course in the Christian faith with us?  In five weeks we can help you learn the basics of the Christian faith.  If you would like to participate, please contact us and we'll let you know when our next course is scheduled.

Join Us for
Great Fellowship and
Joyful Worship

Our morning worship service is a traditional, reformed worship service.  We worship the one God who eternally exists in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  This one God knows us fully and completely, and has sovereignly called us into his presence for worship each Lord's day.  Our focus is on the transcendent glory of our infinitely personal Creator and Redeemer, whom we approach through His Son the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the Holy Spirit.

Our worship is a revelation of the God of grace, who does not treat us as our sins deserve, but freely receives all who repent of their sins and trust in his word.  His amazing grace is seen in the gift of his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who in humility took on our humanity, and in that humanity he bled and died for the sins of his people.  His sacrificial death fully atoned for all of their sin, eliminating the need for any further sacrifices or offerings for sin.  What is more, his perfect righteousness has been credited to all who believe on him, so that they may enter the presence of the Father boldly in worship, knowing that in Christ they are now made perfect, even as their Father in heaven is perfect. We now live in hope of the glory of God, and await eagerly the revelation of his Son from heaven.

Our worship is spiritual and true, as we worship in the simplicity and purity of God's word and Spirit.  The Scriptures of the Old and New Testament reveal the mind and will of God for us, showing us how to be saved from the wrath of God and restored to his good favor.  These Scriptures always focus on Jesus Christ in his work as our Prophet, Priest, and King.  They provide the foundation for renewing us in Christ's image, making us mature and complete in him.  They will transform our families, our church, and our world, until the earth is full of the knowledge of the Lord "as the waters cover the sea" (Isaiah 11:9).

We value a traditional Reformed Liturgy that reminds us of our connections with the saints of the past, and points to our fellowship in heavenly places.  We recite the Apostle's Creed and the Nicene Creed to show our union with the historic Christian church and the faith that has been passed down for generations.  We include the Lord's Prayer in our prayers as a part of worship so that we may learn how to pray more fully in private. We sing of God's glory and his work of redemption using psalms and hymns approved by our session and the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.  They express a mature faith in Jesus Christ, and provide rich vocal and instrumental harmonies for our worship.  We bring our offerings before the Lord for his blessing, so that his kingdom would advance in our community and throughout the earth.

"Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.  I once was lost, but now am found, was blind, but now I see." --John Newton.
